Glen Powell is Going Back to School

LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA JULY 11 Glen Powell attends the Premiere of Universal Pictures' Twisters on July 11 2024 in Los.

Glen Powell has become known for a lot of things: a fighter pilot in Top Gun: Maverick, a rom-com heartthrob, and now, a soon-to-be college graduate.

Hollywood’s latest “It” Guy has found meteoric success over the last several years after starring in multiple blockbusters (Top Gun, Anyone But You, Twisters), but that isn’t stopping him from wanting to finish the degree he started years ago. The 35-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter in May that he had moved back to his hometown of Austin, Texas, and was going back to school at the University of Texas at Austin.

“I think it’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me,” he told THR in May. “Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it.” The actor completed one year at UT Austin in his teens but left school to move to Los Angeles and pursue acting.

So, how will Powell juggle his career with the demands of classes and exams? Will he have to be present in Austin for class? Not quite. The actor told IndieWire last week that he’s “not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular.” Powell will be starting production on Edgar Wright’s remake of the 1987 film “The Running Man,” which will film in London in the fall. In between shooting, Powell will be making time for his academics.

“I’m going to be in London, but I am going to be going back for proctored exams,” Powell explained adding that he’d be using Zoom for class. “So, they’re letting me figure it out [with] distance learning.”

Powell said that he’d have to return in person for proctored exams and that Wright has been “very nice about letting me finish my degree in the middle of his massive movie.”

Glen Powell is in the midst of his whirlwind press tour for Twisters — a sequel to the classic 1996 movie — starring alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos. The real star of the press events has been his dog Brisket, who Powell adopted while filming the movie.
